Height = 35 mm for actual dimension > 10.5 mm
    Thickness = 9 mm

    Definition

Gauge blocks are highly precisely manufactured, rectangular measuring bodies
with precisely defined lengths. In metrology and quality assurance, they are used to calibrate measuring instruments, set up machines, and perform comparison/setting measurements. All specifications are laid down in DIN 861 and DIN EN ISO 3650.

    Material

Gauge blocks are available in various materials – we offer steel, ceramic, and carbide. The table below shows the different properties in comparison.

    Property Steel Ceramic Carbide
    Coefficient of thermal expansion 11.5 ⋅ 10-6 / K 9.3 ⋅ 10-6 / K 4.5 ⋅ 10-6 / K

    Accuracy Classes

Gauge blocks are manufactured in various accuracy classes or tolerance classes, which indicate the precision with which the dimension is manufactured. In addition to the most common classes 2, 1, and 0, there is class K (calibration class), which is primarily used for reference measurements.
The higher the number, the greater the permissible deviation from the nominal dimension. The choice of accuracy class depends on the intended use and the required tolerances in the respective measuring process.

    Class 2
Mostly used as "working standards" at testing stations in manufacturing areas and for setting measuring tools and fixtures.

    Class 1
Used for setting and calibrating gauges and measuring instruments in measuring rooms and at testing stations in manufacturing areas with high accuracy.

    Class 0
Used for high-precision test equipment monitoring and calibration in air-conditioned measuring rooms.

    Instructions for Use

When using gauge blocks, some important notes must be observed to maintain their high accuracy and avoid measurement errors.

    Before Use

    • Use in a thermally stable environment (ideally 20°C)
    • Handle as briefly as possible or work with gloves – body heat from hands can cause thermal expansion
    • Wipe/clean with a soft cloth; gauge blocks must be absolutely clean and grease-free when used
    • Do not use alcohol or petroleum spirit for cleaning, as this can cause corrosion.

    After Use

    • Rust protection treatment with corrosion protection oil
    • Storage in a case/box

    Wringing

A gauge block accessory can be used for large gauge block combinations. From 125 mm length, gauge blocks have two holes with which they can be securely fixed in the holder.

    Application Examples

    • Checking or calibrating an outside micrometer
    • Setting for turning to a stop on the lathe
    • Setting the depth stop on the drill press
