The base consists of naturally aged, dark natural hard stone. The measuring surface is refined by hand lapping, achieving a high level of accuracy. Natural hard stone has low thermal conductivity and expansion, is non-magnetic and electrically non-conductive, rust-proof, and acid-resistant.

DIN 876 Part 1 specifies the tolerances for the flatness of natural hard stone surface plates. The flatness tolerance for accuracy grade 00 is 3 µm.
